Sonata in D Minor, III. Allegro

Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (composer), Avi Avital (mandolin), Yizhar Karshon, Ophira Zakai, Patric Zepec (Basso continuo)

Lv.13
Allegro

bentuxthecowben

Directions: Allegro (at a brisk pace).

Analysis: As a result of Scarlatti being in the employ of the elite or royal Portuguese and Spanish, his music has subsequently adopted a Latin feel, despite him being ethnically Italian. This is highly evident in the example that this chart quotes, where the choice of the mandolin (and various other instruments in the basso continuo group) seems inspired by the timbres of Latin folk music. Indeed this, along with the distinctive rhythm and Avital's choice of tempo evoke the image of dance. Scarlatti is also credited as a great influence of the Classical period, though some of his music (including moments in this sonata) reminds one of the Romantic period.
