Christmas Isn't Real
“We done yet?”
Rene watched helplessly as her family piled item after item into their cart.
Useless item after useless item.
Rene stopped trying to control herself, and started to put things back on the shelves.
“Please, we don’t need a new pan, or a new Bluetooth speaker.”
But of course, her family would attempt to rebut her at every turn with the same argument: “this is a good deal and we cannot miss out”, and “we have coupons so it will be fine”.
Of course it would not be fine, not for Rene.
She saw Sarah, her best friend, go broke because of “good deals” and “coupon-oriented shopping”, trapping her into a corner, forcing her to skip bills and trash her credit score by being able to only pay back the minimum payment on credit cards. As the last dash of salt in her wounds, society then punished her by ruining her life - forced to drop out of college and to work several low-paying jobs at once, but always teasing her with pictures of rich celebrities and all their extravagance.
In other words, copious, wanton shopping bled Sarah dry like an invisible leech, and yet left her wanting - social media feeds compel her to show her wealth - of which there was no more - by showing others’ wealth.
Rene could not let it happen to her family, animosity be damned.
“Please just listen for once - the prices keep going up, we can’t afford all of this. Couldn’t we just...buy some cards and write one for each person?”
Rene’s very pragmatic solution fell on overly optimistic ears, which regarded it as only a last resort. No, they had to buy sweaters and mugs and other on-sale items covered by coupons because it was the only way to show affection.
By spending money.
“Miss, you alright?”
A restocking worker approached Rene, pointing out her aggressive complexion and her clenched fist.
Rene’s eyes were drawn to the worker’s beard. She had seen it before, she knew it, though exactly when and where eluded her.
Feeling reassured by the familiarity, she decided to vent a bit.
Besides, what harm could it do?
“I can’t stop my family from buying useless shit.”
“Just let them choose, you don’t own them.”
After a moment of consideration, anger arose again, and a morose Rene went in search of the bearded worker who left the sour comment, but to no avail.
She never did see the work ID on the man, and no one on the floor seemed to have facial hair.
The talk did quite a lot of harm; her agitation burned green.
