“Wait, why do we get scores?

“‘Programme notes’?”

Indeed, this was usually not the case for Horacio. His clients typically ask him and his friends to “simply play this list of Christmas hymns”, and in the extremely rare cases he got part scores, they were certainly not as peppered with accidentals as these ones.

“We’re not playing for just ‘anyone’ this year.”

And indeed, if the event programme was anything to go by, their client was a true connoisseur: starting off their banquet-concert - titled “Mysterium” - with a 10-minute multi-stylistic electronic song they themselves produced; proceeding seamlessly into an arrangement of “Gloria in excelsis Deo” in the style of Debussy; then moving to Horacio and co.’s rendition of “Winter Wonderland”; moving to a finale with a rock band playing “Winter Wonderland” again, capped off with a percussion cadenza.

The notes “SLEIGH BELL” was printed conspicuously at the end of the notes. An enclosed slip reminded Horacio that “percussion, if needed, will be provided at the venue”, and that “any changes to the scores should be discussed prior to the concert”.

“Just who does this dude think he is?”

“Look, I can’t tell if he’s joking when he says he’s working with the devil, who apparently has a bull’s head. Don’t think too hard about it.”

Though Horacio thought this act was nought but madness, the alternatives were all far more orthodox, and dare he say, boring.
