“You want your name.”

The wolf’s voice was gentle, silky smooth, and so very powerful - it reverberated in my skull and shook my soul.

I wanted to know.

“So I’ll tell you what it is.”

Images flashed before me on the crystalline cave walls, cycling rapidly but coherently. My first cuss word, my first crime, my first murder, my first romp in the sheets, and all the moments leading up to me passing out in my car, neural cybernetics overloaded.

“Mundie, that is your name. You are remembered thus.”

The wolf knew my disappointment.

As if it were a sham psychic ashamed, it tried to slink away, though I pursued it to a clearing.

The icy winds - so far unfelt - were a slap on my face.

And there it was, maw wide open, ready to swallow the moon, though it decided its dinner would wait.

“Your fate lies here - the moon.

“Whether you like it or not, you will die for it, die because of it. You will attribute your death to something just dumb enough for your feeble mind to grasp, but just grand enough to delude yourself. Your hunt for your name is meaningless - your name is whatever you will be remembered as.

“Doom yourself. Nothing will stand in your way.”

As the moon crumbled away with the wolf’s sardonic voice, so did the ground ahead of me - a fault became a fissure became a chasm became miles and miles of nothingness.

Down and down I tumbled, unable to scream. Down and down I tumbled, all the way back into my seat.
